It is common to hear that investing in the right fitness equipment can help with motivation and injury prevention. So the search for the best weightlifting shoes is not in vain. It is very important, especially if you want to lift heavy weights.
Proper athletic shoes are essential for any sport or workout. Just as running shoes come in all shapes and sizes, weight training shoes have their own specialties and styles.
We asked two of our Future Trainers to help you choose the perfect pair for you. Dr. Phillip Morgan, CSCS, Senior Performance Coach, and Mr. Marc Macaskill NASM Certified Performance Coach with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science.
If you only do competitive weightlifting, specifically if you train muscle strength or lift heavy weights very often, you should consider weightlifting-specific shoes. Says Marc Macaskill, “You don’t see Olympic weightlifters who don’t wear weightlifting shoes because these shoes are so stable.” That’s partly because they’re heavy (which makes them unsuitable for box jumps and burpees).
Also, the heel height is about an inch to an inch and a half, Marc Macaskill says. That extra height, Marc Macaskill says, “helps people with weak ankle mobility to crouch deeper.” (That said, you should still work on your ankle mobility and strength: here are weak ankles and how ankle mobility affects the rest of your body).
Can I wear running shoes for weightlifting?
If you are dedicated to weightlifting, looking for a pair of shoes specific to weight training or cross-training will be a good investment – and better for your feet. Says Marc Macaskill, “It’s important not to have too much padding, as is the case with many running shoes.”
Marc Macaskill “It can alter your form and create instability, which can lead to injury.” That said, you should throw in the idea of the versatility of your lifting shoes altogether, but logging your miles in these “cloudy” running shoes is probably a must to stay out of the weight room.
Marc Macaskill recommends opting for a more affordable pair of armchair weightlifting shoes first and spending more than you have ideas on what kind of workout to do.

What to look for in the Best shoes for weight training women's
- Flat or raised sole (depending on preference)
- Minimal cushioning
- Rigid flat outsole
- Forefoot flexibility
First, it depends on whether you want a shoe with a raised heel or a flat shoe. Dr. Phillip Morgan explains, "Many people prefer to lift in flat shoes like Converse because they prefer minimal arch support or heel lift." A stiffer sole allows the heel to exert more force and lift heavier weights more powerfully than foam shoes. High-heeled shoes, on the other hand, "allow the heel to exert force and regain full range of motion while protecting the foot," Marc Macaskill tells SELF.
Also, look for a pair with an adjustable midsole - in addition to traditional laces - to make you more comfortable in your shoes and less in the middle of your foot's movement. Shoes with mesh panels and puncture holes allow for breathability without sacrificing necessary structure, while a stiff, flat outsole (inflexible shoes) creates a stable base.
Also, while you don't want too much foam or marshmallow cushioning, some cushioning and shock absorption is appropriate when these shoes are used for strength training and high-impact cross-training.
Dr. Phillip Morgan tells SELF, "I highly recommend trying different models and reading reviews from people with similar needs to find the best fit."
With Dr. Phillip Morgan and Marc Macaskill's criteria in mind, we selected the 9 best weightlifting shoes for women's Training, from Olympic weightlifting pros to weightlifting beginners.
Standard Weightlifting Shoe Composition
A typical weightlifting shoe consists of a high upper, an instep system or strap, a wide toe box, and a high, rigid heel. Bottom to top.
- Stiff heel. The standard heel of weightlifting shoes is made of TPU. However, some older models are made of EVA, laminated leather, or wood.
High heel. Heel heights vary by model, brand, and manufacturer, but 1/4 inch is a good rule of thumb. - Wide toe box. All women's weightlifting shoes have a wide toe box, but few do. This wider toe box helps ensure stability and toe spacing.
Closure system or straps. Many shoes have at least one type of closure or strap system, whether a standard Velcro closure, a BOA closure system, or an intermediate system.
Raised uppers Many weightlifting shoes have high uppers that provide extra protection to the ankle. - Heel heights vary.
One of the most important things to consider with all weightlifting options is why weightlifting shoes have their own category to begin with: heel supply. Heel height is an important factor for many lifters to increase comfort when lifting.
The standard heel height for weightlifting shoes is three-quarters of an inch. However, there are models with a one-inch heel height (such as the performance shown above). In addition, models such as the Powerlift 4 have a much more modest heel height.
A woman's height also affects heel height. Tall women look good in tall heels. This is because tall women generally have longer legs.
Straps and fastening mechanisms
Another common feature of women's weightlifting shoes is the fastening mechanism of the shoe. Most weightlifting shoes consist of a single strap and lace. However, some (like the aforementioned Reebok Legacy Lifter) have multiple straps. Others have only one BOA adjustment or a combination of strap and BOA adjustment. There are also some weightlifting shoes, like the New Balance Foreground, that still have excellent straps and attachment mechanisms. The choice of shoe is up to the buyer.
Straps are usually attached to the top of the tongue. This provides the ankle mobility necessary for exercises such as heavy squats, a type of weightlifting, while also providing durability and stability.
Heel Construction
Most shoes designed for weightlifting have a raised heel. The choice of material is a matter of personal preference. Heels are usually made of plastic, but TPU materials are often of higher quality. Plastic heels provide a stiffer support surface. They also tend to last longer than wooden or leather heels.
In comparison, wooden heels are primarily for weightlifters, who prefer older, more traditional styles of shoes. Wooden heels can give weightlifters a stronger "floor" feeling.
Like wooden heels, leather stilettos also have a traditional feel. The NOBULL training shoes shown above are an example of this and are one of the few brands that offer strength training shoes coated in leather rather than TPU or wood.
LACING SYSTEMS
In most cases, weightlifting shoes come with a standard lacing system that you will find on other athletic shoes. In fact, the laces on weightlifting shoes are usually the same as those on tennis or running shoes. However, they can be changed at any time, allowing for more efficient and focused competition.
However, the lacing system differs from some of the shoes mentioned above. Two shoes worth mentioning are the Inov-8 FastLift 370 and the Adidas Performance. Both feature the BOA lacing system, which allows the user to adjust the tightness by turning a knob. This BOA system replaces both regular laces and Velcro closures.

Faqs
History of Weightlifting Shoes
The growth of weightlifting shoes for women has been astronomical over the past few decades. However, this has not always been the case. Until the past decade, there were no manufacturers producing weightlifting shoes specifically for women. The demand and use of these weightlifting shoes were directly related to the popularity of weightlifting and weightlifting for women.
Shortly before the Great Depression in the United States, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) created rules-based competitions to test the bench press, snatch, and clean and jerk skills of professional weightlifters.
Since then, many athletes, both men, and women have worn a variety of styles of shoes to compete, ranging from regular trainers to boots to boxing shoes.
However, as weightlifting grew and developed, its style began to change. Since then, it has become clear that heel height is a significant competitive advantage for female weightlifters.
Why are high heels important in weightlifting shoes for women?
High-heeled shoes have completely changed the game for lifters of all body types. They offered lifters a new way to lose weight. High-heeled shoes reduced common problems such as increased stability issues and shin angles that can cause injury, discomfort, and overall pain. This is true of weightlifting shoes for women for men.
This trend is said to have started in the Soviet Union when the ankle mobility of male weightlifters was greatly improved. Later, many shoe manufacturers began developing their own versions of high-heeled weightlifting shoes, improving on the original design and making them a modern choice for both men and women.
Always Striving for Improvement
During the 1960s and 1970s, Adidas established itself as the leader in weightlifting shoes and brought the concept of modern weightlifting for men and women to the United States. Adidas was the first company to offer a separate line of weightlifting shoes for women from those for men.
Subsequently, weightlifting shoe designers decided to remove the upper portion of the shoe and lower the forefoot strap. This change was decided in order to provide more ankle freedom than previous high-top models. Ankle mobility is one of the most common problems for weightlifting women. Since then, shoe manufacturers have continued to make minor changes in style and technology, including BOA laces, lower heels, and synthetic uppers.
Preliminary Examination of Weightlifting Shoes
Weightlifting shoes, especially women's weightlifting shoes, are some of the most technologically advanced and complex shoes on the market today. However, there are a number of factors to consider before making a purchase.
Here are some of the key factors to be aware of: different heel heights, strap and closure mechanisms, heel configurations, and lacing mechanisms. Each of these points will be discussed in detail, but first, see Making Standard Weightlifting Shoes.
